Worcestershire's 2009 Success Stories
Our aim is to keep improving in 2010 !
1. The County 1st and 2nd Teams led their Leagues for more than half the season.
1st Team finished 2nd and the 2nd Team 3rd on countback.
Both teams are now effectively challenging every year for league honours.
2. County Boys Under 18 Team won the Midland Region Qualifying and represented the 10 Midland Counties in the National Finals at Whittington Heath in August.
Although the team finished 4th the County can be very proud of their achievement. The team was : Matt Tweddell, Chris Nugent, Tom Warbrick, Craig Richardson, Rumayne Stevens, Rob Aldred and Josh Carpenter.
3. Chris Nugent, Boys U18 County Player and Welsh Junior International.
Performed superbly in the Home Internationals and had a great season with several powerful performances in strong fields.
4. Rob Aldred, County Under 18 Team member, won the UK Faldo series regional qualifier.
Finished 3rd in the Under 16 age group at the World Finals held in Rio De Janerio, Brazil.
5. GolfMark - The Quality Assurance assessment of golf clubs' management of children in their care.
Worcestershire, with 20 accredited clubs, has twice as many as any other county in England.
Ten more clubs are working towards the standard required.
This is an essential benchmark for all clubs and makes a very important statement about the quality of management in our clubs.
Away from playing the game, this was the most important commitment to raise the standards in our sport made by clubs this year.
6. The County Golf Partnership worked with all clubs to promote recruitment and member satisfaction.
Acquiring funds from outside the county, the CGP sponsored events, at over 20 clubs, at which over 2000 new would-be golfers were introduced to the game.
Pitcheroak Golf Club - When this club was threatened with closure, the CGP made a bid to Redditch Council to use its resources to raise golf's profile in the Borough, and stimulate increased usage of the golf course. The result?
Membership rose from 50 to over 200, golf was taught in every secondary school, the council saved money and the number of rounds of golf played increased. This was a great win-win result and is a powerful case study to take to other municipal courses under threat.
7. The "Club and Coach" Project
This was lottery funded and resulted in 10 squads of junior boys and girls forming to work with their Professionals at club level. A major aspect of the Project was the training provided to the Professionals to assist them to improve as coaches. Worcestershire were again one of the first counties to recognise the value of this programme and in the first year over 100 juniors have been involved and from these squads, 4 boys have gone on already to join the County Elite coaching
