Worcestershire 1st Team v Derbyshire
Match Report - June 5th 2011
The first league match of the season was played at Ashbourne golf club on a slightly overcast day but 10 Worcestershire players we ready for the challenge ahead.
The foursomes were lead out by Chris Heeley and Richard Sadler fresh from their team win at Moseley the day before. They didn’t disappoint with a 4/3 victory.
Next up was a new pairing of Hems and Wallace. Having not played together before club selection and advice was interesting. On the 15th, after a perfect drive from Hems leaving 240 in he was heard to say “you’ve got to go for it after I’ve hit that you can’t lay up with iron” Wallace was heard to reply “I am going for it Jon, unlike you I can reach with 3iron” and Wallace promptly knocked it on the green to secure the birdie and a 1 hole advantage which they never lost. I think the lesson from this is to trust whatever the Captain picks!!!
Next came the reliable/formidable” safe as houses” pair of Hill and Lane. 2/1 win, enough said, well played guys.
Bromley and Nugent recaptured the form they had shown at Hunstanton for a convincing 4/3 victory followed by Carpenter and Marshall winning 2/1
5-0 FOURSOMES WOT A START!!
The singles in the afternoon were not as successful as the foursomes. Nugent and Hems set us on the way with two great wins, however, the exertions of the weekend must have overcome Heeley and Sadler who slumped to big defeats. Bromley and Lane secured the points required to win the game and with Wallace getting a half the afternoon singles were lost 4.5 to 5.5, however enough to gain a fantastic victory in the first game of the season.
Well played to all the guys, a great team performance where everyone contributed at least half a point.
Thanks to Derbyshire for the spirit in which the game was played and hopefully this is the start of a successful season for Worcestershire.
