Match report

Sunday 13th March 2011 at Wharton Park Golf Club

On a rainy Sunday morning, golf was probably not in the forefront of everyone’s mind as they rolled into Wharton Parks car park, but after a healthy breakfast, the captain handing out water and bananas from the back of his car and the sun appearing, everyone’s mood changed for the better.

Sadler and Heeley lead Worcestershire from the front and were unlucky not to record a victory after some solid golf. Bromley and Wallace renewed an old partnership and continued where they left off with a 5 under par round (rumour has it Wallace’s putting made Bromley’s wedge play look good). Lane and Hill continued their unbeaten form with another win from trap 3 and the old (and bald) head of Darren Smith lead the young talent of Larden around the course to a good victory. Stevens and Carpenter formed a great partnership and polished off the last Leicestershire’s morning  pairings giving the team a “healthy” 4-1 lead going into the afternoon.

Richard Sadler won handsomely in game 1 and looked to be leading Worcestershire to a comfortable victory. Leicestershire made a mini comeback in the next 3 games to close the gap, however a good victory from Captain Wallace (in the dizzy heights of  trap 6!) followed by wins from Laney, Rumayne, Darren and Josh sealed the first  victory of the season and hopefully the first of many.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank and congratulate Rod and Peter for their 2 successful years in office, well done guys. Thanks Stuart and the Leicester team for playing the game in a great spirit. To Wharton Park and their staff for the course and catering, and finally, from all the players and especially me, thanks to Andy Lammas for his help and support on the day.
