Captain's Match Report – 3rd July 2011
We arrived at a very hot and sunny and perfectly presented Leek Golf Club, boasting a young 2nd team eager to make a mends for the last minute slip up in our previous match against Derbyshire.
The foursomes almost worked to perfection with outstanding wins from Matt Tweddell & Nick Seabourne, playing together for the first time and the ever reliable pairing of Ben Myatt & Henry James. Russ Ager and I were the only casualties falling on the last hole. Worcestershire went into lunch with a very pleasing 4-1 lead.
Four points from victory going into the 10 singles matches, we tried the different approach of balancing the team throughout, aiming for a steady flow of wins. Matt Tweddell went out in trap one and can home with a very impressive 6&4 win, taking maximum points for the day on his return to the county setup, this was followed up with wins from Henry James, Ian Martin, myself and, making his senior debut, Kieron Austin from Hagley with another maximum points haul, and, finally, result of the day, Russ Ager with a mighty 9&8 victory.
This gave Worcestershire a very impressive 11.5 – 3.5 victory, with us winning 7.5 out of 10 singles matches, and sending out a strong message to our future opponents.
I would like to thank all the players for their effort & commitment during the very hot playing conditions, everyone from the Staffordshire Golf Union, their captain Kevin Beattie, Leek Golf Club for the superb course & refreshments throughout the day, and the Worcestershire officials who attended, Past President Mr Roy Hobbis and our Chairman Mr Bill Thompson for their continued support.
