County 2nd Team v Warwickshire
Maxstoke Park – Sunday 5th September 2010
Worcestershire 2nds Spoil the Warwickshire Party!

The Warwickshire 2nd Team were on an incredible 8 match winning run and were fully expected to win against Worcestershire at Maxstoke Park and secure the League title for the 2nd year in a row.
The morning foursomes matches were hard fought and a great putt from James Berwick ( partnered by Paul Reeves) on the 18th green to halve his match reduced the lunchtime lead for Warwickshire to 3 ½ v 2 ½. Great praise needs to go to the two junior boys, Henry James and Ben Myatt, for an excellent 3 and 1 foursomes win as well as Jon Pugh and Dan Downes for grinding out a tough 1 hole victory. Pugh’s pitch on the last to a foot to secure the win was out of the top drawer.
The afternoon singles began steadily with Rudi Hercik coming right back to form with a great 4 and 3 win in the top match. This was followed by good, solid wins for Nick Seabourne and Jamie Dunster. Rumayne Stevens stepped up a gear and won six holes in a row to come from 3 down to gain a well earned half. The two junior boys found it tough going and Jon Pugh ran into a 6 birdie blitz from his opponent. Word was spreading that Worcestershire were fighting back and that the tail was starting to wag. Bill (The Rock) Thompson waded in with a 6&5 win whilst Dan Downes, on his County debut, battled hard for a 2&1 win. Paul Reeves showed nerves of steel as he holed a 4 footer on the last to win and Darren Smith, 3 down at the turn, steadily clawed his way back to win his match on the last green in front of a shocked team of Worcestershire players.
This 10-8 victory clearly leaves both teams needing to win their final matches for the league title. Worcestershire are away to Nottinghamshire at Stanton on the Wolds and Warwickshire, who have the better goal average, are away to S&H at Church Stretton.
It was a great day for the Worcestershire 2nd Team. The attitude and determination shown by the players was first class and they should have every chance of winning again in Nottingham. Special mentions are needed for Norman Bolton, ( Past President) who gave up his time to support the team all day and for Dan Downes, who secured 2 vital points on his County debut.
