Seniors Captain Update
I am delighted and honoured, not only to represent my county in the seniors team but especially being elected as Captain for, hopefully the next 2 years. It would be remiss if I did not take this opportunity to acknowledge the tremendous work which my predecessor, Brian Morris put into the Senior's County executive but the excellent tenure he enjoyed as Captain. Brian will be a hard act to follow and I believe the senior amateur golf scene owes a lot to the enthusiasm and determination Brian has shown in developing the senior golf within the Midland Golf Union.
When I reviewed the team squad which was available within the Worcestershire Clubs my only problem seemed to be how to pick 12 for the matches. We have 26 eligible senior players with handicaps of 6 or less and no doubt even more would be available if work and other commitments allowed. Brian had already completed the work in compiling a list of the fixtures and the player's availability.
We played our first fixture against Nottingham where we won 10 : 8 and this was followed in quick succession with a draw against the Worcestershire Junior Team, which for all those involved, certainly felt like a result, especially when you witness how well the juniors play. Everyone involved in that fixture all commented on the behaviour and example set by these youngsters and they were a credit to Brian Peplow and his team of coaches not to mention a delight to play against.
Our results since have been not as glowing losing 12:6 to Leicestershire at Wharton Park where the course proved the winner for our 'lads' who all wished they had buggies! Then our inaugural match against Lincolnshire at Forest Pines Golf and Country Club, which necessitated an overnight stay, resulted in a 14:4 win for Lincolnshire. However, from the players re-action the fixture was a great success and both the above courses were in superb condition with excellent hospitality to match.
The next fixture is against Derbyshire at Redditch Golf Club where the team hopes to start re-dressing the trend but whatever happens our main objective is to carry the flag for Worcestershire Seniors Amateur Golf. Oh, and not forgetting to enjoy the matches and meeting old friends. More updates to follow now that I seem to have got the hang of this web site.
Good Golfing!
