Captain's Match Report  

Firstly, a big thank you to Moseley Golf Club who had postponed their course maintenance programme so that we could play my last match as Captain at my own club. It was really appreciated especially as the course was in excellent condition with greens just superb.

At lunch time, as is so often the case, we were trailing 4.5 to 1.5 and so had a real contest on our hands. Course reports throughout the afternoon proved that once again matches were very close. With the much fancied pairing of Bill Thompson and Peter Adams achieving a half when they were 4 up at one stage I knew that we had to start putting points on the board. Thankfully my partner Charlie Smith and myself managed to win 6 and 4 and then John Swann playing with Fred Savage won 4 and 3 quickly followed by Richard Coverdale and Willie Kerr comfortably winning 5 and 4, my spirits were high.

Unfortunately, these quickly turned to anxiety when our third pairing lost 4 and 3 leaving the final match of Tony Jowle and Alan Davidson needing a half to secure a match win. They fought valiantly with a great half by Alan on the fifteen and the match was all square going down seventeen. However, the opposition finished birdie: birdie and we lost the match by 1 point of 9.5 to 8.5.

The season ended therefore with 6 wins and 3 losses with 2 of the losses being by a 1 point margin!

A great season where we once again enjoyed the hospitality and friendship of the other counties, played on some great courses and renewed friendships all in a spirit of good competitive humour. I am sure all the players will join me in thanking the golf clubs for making their courses available to play the matches both home and away. Last but by no means least a big thank you to all the players who believe that representing their county is regarded as an honour and for their great support during my 2 years as Captain. Being Captain of one’s county is without doubt an honour and privilege and one which will leave me with fond memories but above all pride in representing Worcestershire.

Thanks to each and every one involved in the County for their tireless work and support during my 2 years as Captain.
